Health and safety company - This month we have been chatting to Paul Binns who has just set up his own health and safety company.

"So what is it all about? Well after several years of working in the health and safety field and providing guidance and support to employers I decided the time was right to start thinking longer term, where do I want to be in another 20 years. When will the time be right to follow my dreams and form my own company. Well guess what? That time is now.

PJB HSE has been set up to offer to all business’s a complete health and safety service. We can carry out all the little annoying things that prevent you from concentrating on what you do best, running your own business. We aim to work as team, form a partnership that you can trust, and create safe working cultures

We have no interest in forcing health and safety down your throats or using scare tactics in order to gain more money. Our own code of conduct prevents us from the hard the sell, reputation is everything to us.

Well, let’s be honest, not a lot. I can’t hand on heart pick fault with the competition and tell you this and tell you that. Safety first - Whilst catching up on the news this morning I was horrified to hear about a 2 year old being snatched by an alligator in Orlando. What a terrible story to wake up to!

I've got kids myself (although not quite as young as 2!) so it really made me think about the situation as it could have happened to anyone.

Having read the story it appears there were warning signs that read 'No swimming!' by the lagoon it doesn't sound like there was any mention of why or anything else stated on the sign, perhaps the hotel wasn't even aware that Alligators visited the area. Obviously, and thankfully, I wasn't there to witness this terrible incident but it made me think that perhaps at times (not just for this area but also in the everyday situations) signs need to be a bit more blunt so on these premises perhaps say something like 'No swimming in the lake. Alligators are common in this area!'. 

I know I would take notice of a 'No swimming' sign as it would be there for a reason and I would think 'deep water' or 'very shallow water' but if it mentioned 'alligators' I'd be extra vigilant around the water area particularly as I'm not from Florida and alligators would not be the first thing that would spring to mind. 

I guess what I'm trying to say is, in general, that whilst some people are aware of the dangers of a certain action not everyone is, particularly if they are not familiar with the area or surroundings.

This is a very tragic situation and I can't begin to imagine what this family are going through.

We have had schools wanting specific wording directing pupils, staff and parents to the playing grounds, where to park, 'swimming pool access'  etc as well as facility management companies wanting labels customised, builders after signs with their logos added and more.

Floor stands - MJN Safety Signs can help you!

Floor stands - We have a large range of plastic floor stands that are a quick and effective way of highlighting people of potential dangers and hazards. 

I've often seen the 'slippery floor' signs in hotel lobbies when it's been raining outside and people have been coming in out of the rain or in supermarkets when someone has spilt something and the cleaners haven't yet arrived.
